About sonnen

sonnen was founded in 2010 in Wildpoldsried, Germany, and has been part of Shell since 2019. It makes home battery systems such as the sonnenBatterie and runs virtual power plant programs. Its Australian business is based in Mawson Lakes, South Australia.

Current range

sonnen's current home battery for Australia and New Zealand is the sonnenBatterie Evo, launched in December 2021 as its first outdoor-rated home battery for the region. It's an AC-coupled lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with 10 kWh of usable capacity, 5 kW continuous and 7 kW surge output, and an IP56 rating. It can supply backup power in a blackout and has a Black Start function for AC-coupled solar.

Older models

The earlier sonnenBatterie hybrid 9.53 range (2.25 to 13.5 kWh) no longer has current Clean Energy Council approvals, so it can't be newly installed with small-scale technology certificates (STCs). The Evo is the sonnen battery on the approved list now. If you already own a hybrid 9.53, contact sonnen Australia about warranty and service.

Warranty

sonnen states a 10-year warranty, or 10,000 cycles if that comes first. It covers the inverter, power electronics, energy manager and battery modules.

Service and support

sonnen sells through accredited installers across Australia and backs the Evo with local service. Owners can contact sonnen Australia at service@sonnen.com.au.

Choosing a sonnen battery installer

• Accreditation: the installer must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) for batteries, or the battery won't qualify for the federal discount. Ask for their accreditation number.
• The exact model: check the quoted sonnen model is on the approved list above, with its usable capacity in kWh.
• The inverter: sonnen makes inverters too. Ask whether the battery is paired with a sonnen inverter or a compatible one from another brand, and confirm it can join a virtual power plant (VPP), which the federal discount requires.
• Backup: ask what keeps running in a blackout and whether backup costs extra.
• Warranty: ask how the sonnen warranty is registered, what capacity it guarantees, and who to call if something goes wrong.
• The discount: the federal discount should be shown as its own line on the quote, so you can compare quotes fairly.

Questions about sonnen batteries

Are sonnen batteries on the approved list?

Yes. 1 sonnen battery model is currently on the Clean Energy Council approved list (data as at 23 Sept 2026). A battery must be on the list to qualify for the federal discount.

How much is the federal discount on a sonnen battery?

It depends on the usable capacity and the installation date. For installations from 1 May 2026 to 31 Dec 2026, approved sonnen batteries from 10 kWh to 10 kWh would get roughly $2,584 to $2,584 off, at a certificate price of $38. The battery rebate calculator works it out for your date and size.

Can you find me a sonnen installer?

Tell us you'd like sonnen and we'll pass that on to up to 3 participating installers in your area. Each installer confirms whether they can supply and install sonnen, or suggests an alternative. We don't guarantee a particular brand, and you're under no obligation to go ahead.

What should a sonnen battery quote include?

The exact battery model and usable capacity, the inverter it connects to (sonnen also makes inverters, so check whether it's a sonnen inverter or a compatible one from another brand), the federal discount shown as a separate line, backup or blackout options, the warranty terms, and the installer's Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation number.
