Installing a home EV charger

A wall charger is a permanent electrical installation. Here's what to expect and what to ask.

What's involved

  1. Step 1: Site check

A licensed electrician checks your switchboard, supply and where the charger will go. They'll assess whether your supply can handle the extra demand.

  2. Step 2: Choosing the charging rate

Local rules limit the charging rate on single-phase supplies, and the limit differs between states and territories. Three-phase homes can often charge faster.

  3. Step 3: Installation

The electrician installs the charger to the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) and your state's service and installation rules, including the required safety devices.

  4. Step 4: Set-up

The charger is connected to its app, and scheduling or solar-aware charging is configured if it's supported.

Questions to ask the electrician

  • Can my switchboard and supply take a charger without an upgrade?
  • What's the maximum charging rate allowed where I live?
  • What safety protection will be installed with the charger?
  • Is the charger compatible with my solar or a future battery?
  • Will I get a certificate of compliance for the work?
