Who connects you to the grid
Energex runs the electricity network in South East Queensland, from the New South Wales border north to Gympie. Ergon Energy runs the network in regional and rural Queensland. The network business, not your retailer, approves solar and battery connections, and in South East Queensland every system must be approved before it's installed. Your installer usually applies.
Across Queensland, new and replacement solar and battery systems of 10 kVA or more need a generation signalling device (the "emergency backstop"), so the network can switch them off in a grid emergency.
Feed-in tariffs
In South East Queensland, retailers set their own feed-in tariffs and there's no regulated minimum, so it pays to compare offers once your system is connected. The Australian Energy Regulator's Default Market Offer applies to standing offer prices there.
In regional Queensland, the Queensland Competition Authority sets regulated electricity prices and a regulated feed-in tariff each year.
Incentives for batteries in Queensland
- The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discounts eligible batteries. Your installer normally applies the discount to the quote.
- Queensland's Battery Booster rebate has closed.
- From 1 July 2026, South East Queensland retailers must also provide a Solar Sharer Offer with three free hours of electricity in the middle of the day (smart meter needed), which can suit households with a battery.
