How the federal battery discount works
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program gives small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for each kWh of a battery's usable capacity. Installers sell the certificates and take the value off your price, so it appears as a discount on your quote rather than a payment to you.
The number of certificates per kWh falls every six months. From 1 May 2026, capacity above 14 kWh earns 60% of the full rate and capacity above 28 kWh earns 15%, and only the first 50 kWh counts. Certificates are rounded down to a whole number.
| Installed | Certificates per kWh | Size tapering |
|---|---|---|
| 1 July 2025 to 31 December 2025 | 9.3 | No |
