Installers guide

Questions to ask before you sign

A good installer will be happy to answer these. Asking each one the same questions also makes quotes much easier to compare.

About the business

  • Who will design and install the system, and are they accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia? (Battery installs need a battery endorsement.)
  • Is the retailer an Approved Seller under the New Energy Tech Consumer Code?
  • Do you use your own installers or subcontractors?
  • How long have you been operating, and do you regularly work in my area?

About the equipment

  • Which exact panel, inverter and battery models are you quoting?
  • Are they on the Clean Energy Council's approved product lists? (Required for the federal incentive.)
  • What are the product warranties, and who in Australia handles claims?
  • What workmanship warranty do you provide?

About the quote and contract

  • Is the price before or after incentives, and how were they calculated?
  • What's included — switchboard work, monitoring, metering, removal of old equipment?
  • Who applies for network approval, and what happens if the network limits exports?
  • What deposit is required, and what's the payment schedule?
  • What happens if installation is delayed, or if I need to cancel?

Why accreditation and approved products matter

For your system to attract the federal incentive, it generally needs approved equipment and must meet Solar Accreditation Australia's design and installation guidelines. The Clean Energy Regulator can reject certificates for systems that don't.

The New Energy Tech Consumer Code sets service standards for sellers of solar, batteries and EV chargers that go beyond the basic requirements of Australian Consumer Law. In Victoria, being an Approved Seller is required to take part in Solar Victoria programs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check an installer's accreditation?

Ask for their accreditation number and check it with Solar Accreditation Australia. For sellers, ask whether they're a New Energy Tech Approved Seller and confirm it with the Code administrator.
