Solar panels
Solar panels: what to look for
A solar quote lists a lot of specifications. Here's what the main ones mean and why they matter.
Key terms in a panel quote
Panel output (W)
The rated power of each panel under test conditions. More panels × output = system size in kW.
Efficiency
How much of the sunlight hitting a panel becomes electricity. Higher efficiency means more output from the same roof area.
Degradation
Panels slowly produce less over time. The performance warranty states how much output is guaranteed after a set number of years.
Temperature performance
Panels lose some output as they heat up — relevant in hot Australian summers.
Inverters
The inverter converts your panels' DC electricity to AC for your home, and is usually the component to check most carefully.
String inverters
One central inverter for the whole array. Common and cost-effective for simple roofs.
Microinverters & optimisers
Electronics at each panel, which can help on roofs with shading or several orientations.
Hybrid inverters
Designed to work with a battery now or later.

Frequently asked questions
What size solar system do I need?
It depends on how much electricity you use, when you use it, your roof space and orientation, and whether you plan to add a battery or an EV. Installers size the system after looking at your bills and roof — which is why comparing a few quotes helps.
Does my roof need to face north?
North-facing panels generally produce the most across the day in Australia, but east- and west-facing roofs can work well too, especially if you use more power in the morning or late afternoon.
Can I add a battery later?
Usually, yes. Ask each installer whether the inverter they're quoting is battery-ready, or what would be needed to add a battery later.
