Source: Clean Energy Council approved products lists, data as at 23 Sept 2026. Approval means a product meets the standards needed to be installed with government small-scale technology certificates (STCs). It isn't a recommendation, and Energy Quotes doesn't rank products. Check the manufacturer's datasheet and ask your installer before you buy.
Discounts are indicative: certificates for the usable capacity at the rate for today's date, at $38 each. Your installer's quote shows the actual amount. Work it out for your date and size.

Choosing a SMA battery installer
- Accreditation: the installer must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) for batteries, or the battery won't qualify for the federal discount. Ask for their accreditation number.
- The exact model: check the quoted SMA model is on the approved list above, with its usable capacity in kWh.
- The inverter: SMA makes inverters too. Ask whether the battery is paired with a SMA inverter or a compatible one from another brand, and confirm it can join a virtual power plant (VPP), which the federal discount requires.
- Backup: ask what keeps running in a blackout and whether backup costs extra.
- Warranty: ask how the SMA warranty is registered, what capacity it guarantees, and who to call if something goes wrong.
- The discount: the federal discount should be shown as its own line on the quote, so you can compare quotes fairly.
Questions about SMA batteries
- Are SMA batteries on the approved list?
- Yes. 1 SMA battery model is currently on the Clean Energy Council approved list (data as at 23 Sept 2026). A battery must be on the list to qualify for the federal discount.
- How much is the federal discount on a SMA battery?
- It depends on the usable capacity and the installation date. For installations from 1 May 2026 to 31 Dec 2026, approved SMA batteries from 3.3 kWh to 3.3 kWh would get roughly $836 to $836 off, at a certificate price of $38. The battery rebate calculator works it out for your date and size.
- Can you find me a SMA installer?
- Tell us you'd like SMA and we'll pass that on to up to 3 participating installers in your area. Each installer confirms whether they can supply and install SMA, or suggests an alternative. We don't guarantee a particular brand, and you're under no obligation to go ahead.
- What should a SMA battery quote include?
- The exact battery model and usable capacity, the inverter it connects to (SMA also makes inverters, so check whether it's a SMA inverter or a compatible one from another brand), the federal discount shown as a separate line, backup or blackout options, the warranty terms, and the installer's Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation number.
