The rules for home chargers in Sunshine Coast
Sunshine Coast is on the Energex network. These are Energex's rules for home EV chargers.
Step 1: A licensed electrician installs it
A wall charger is a permanent electrical installation, so it must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor.
Step 2: Single phase: up to 32 A
Since 1 October 2026, a single-phase charger of up to 32 A (about 7.4 kW) can be installed without a network control device. Before then, chargers above 20 A needed one. The electrician still checks that your home's total demand suits its supply.
Step 3: Three phase: up to 22 kW
A home with three-phase power can have a charger of up to 22 kW (32 A per phase) without active management, if it switches across all three phases together. Your car also has to accept that rate.
Step 4: Extra work adds to the cost
Energex warns that switchboard upgrades, wiring, metering and electrical safety measures can add to the price. Ask for them to be itemised.
Tariffs and charging times
A time-of-use tariff can suit EV charging, because you can set the charger to run when power is cheaper. Energex notes that Economy Tariff 33 (controlled load) can't be used with solar.
From 1 July 2026, retailers in Default Market Offer areas, including South East Queensland, must provide a Solar Sharer Offer with free electricity during three hours in the middle of the day (a smart meter is needed). If your car is home then, scheduling charging into that window is worth looking at.

Worth asking about in Sunshine Coast
- Charger outside, close to the beach or the bay? Ask whether it's rated for outdoor and coastal sites, and what the warranty says about salt air.
- Building in a new estate? Ask your builder to run a suitable circuit to the garage now. It's simpler than adding one later.
- In the hinterland on a long driveway? Ask how far the charger can be from the switchboard, and how the cable run is priced.
- Ask for the electrician's licence number, and a certificate of compliance when the work is done.

Frequently asked questions
How fast can I charge at home in Sunshine Coast?
Most homes are single phase, which allows a charger of up to 32 A, about 7.4 kW. Homes with three-phase power can go up to 22 kW if the car accepts it. Many cars accept less than 22 kW on AC, so check your car's limit first.
Do I still need a network device for a 7 kW charger?
Not for a new single-phase charger of up to 32 A in Energex's area since 1 October 2026. Homes that already have a device can keep it or ask an electrician about removing it.
Can I charge my EV from solar in Sunshine Coast?
Yes, with a charger that can follow your spare solar, or by scheduling charging for the middle of the day. Economy Tariff 33 can't be used with solar, so a solar home usually charges on its main tariff.
Can I get a charger in a unit or rental in Sunshine Coast?
Often, yes, with permission first: from the body corporate for most units and some townhouses, and from your landlord if you rent.
